Our society is always changing according to the development of technology and the needs of the times. In particular, as the interest in sustainable development increases, the issue of environmental protection has recently emerged as a hot potato. The global environment, which was thought to be infinite so far, has now reached an irreversible level, and as a result, the regulations for environmental protection are springing up everywhere. New regulations can be a shackle to business activity, but on the other hand, they can also signal the formation of new markets. It was the same in the shipbuilding and marine industry in early 2000. As the cases of the marine ecosystem destruction due to the ballast water increased, the International Maritime Organization began discussing the ballast water as a major agenda from the 1999 MEPC meeting. At each meeting, various possibilities for managing the ballast water were discussed, and after refining the words of the discharge regulations, the BWM Convention in 2004 was legislated. As a result, ships needed an auxiliary device, that is, a ballast water management system, to help them meet the ballast water discharge standard.
TECHCROSS opened the BWMS market for the first time. The issue of ballast water management was discussed in the presence of representatives of UN affiliated agencies and governmental and non-governmental organizations around the world. At that time, TECHCROSS, which was researching electrolysis water treatment technology, and its partners who had close cooperation with TECHCROSS also participated in the MEPC meeting as a Korean delegation. TECHCROSS, which naturally sensed market changes through this, grafted the water treatment technology under development to the ballast water management system and obtained the basic approval for the world's first ballast water management system in 2006. The ballast water management system developed by TECHCROSS generates active materials in an electrochemical method to treat harmful microorganisms in ballast water. It conducted land-based and onboard tests for nearly two years to verify that the method keeps the system biologically and environmentally safe, becoming the third in the world to obtain the final approval in 2008. Generally, the systems which did not generate active materials could obtain the approval relatively easy. Nevertheless, it was remarkable that TECHCROSS obtained the final approval only in a year after. Now, more than 10 years have passed since then, about 70 ballast water management systems have been developed, and are being introduced to the market with their own advantages. As of the end of 2021, a total of 47 systems have obtained the final approval of IMO, among which 24 are electrolysis-based products. In other words, it can also be said that TECHCROSS’s latecomers account for half of the products currently in use. It is an accomplished fact that, although difficult to enter any market for the first time, it is easier for latecomers to reduce trial and error by simply following the precedent passed by the first entrant. The reality where it is more difficult to maintain business than to develop a new product. Of the 70 products developed so far, 47 have received the final approval, and less than half of them have actual product sales and installation records. In order to sell products, it is necessary to obtain various kinds of certifications, and to secure the production facilities and product installation capabilities, but it costs more than 1 million dollars just to obtain the approval (there may be a difference in the cost depending on the approval), and if the factory is operated, the cost becomes astronomical. There aren't many companies of a size that can afford these initial costs. Therefore, the market is being reorganized into a structure where only the strong survive and dominate the remaining market in the future. In fact, even if a company succeeded in developing a product early, because of the difficulty of maintaining its business or in order to focus on other business, it might give up the ballast water management system early, or transfer the system to another company, of which the system might be released on the market under a different name. Also, it can be seen that among the companies that are actively conducting business, there are many cases where a company took over the system developed by other company or jointly developed.
The sincerity about ballast water is different. In this connection, TECHCROSS is noteworthy, in that a single company has continued its manufacturing, sales, and AS services from the initial market to now. TECHCROSS did not expand its business area as an octopus spreads its arms while selling marine equipment, nor did it change the business items according to the trend. After developing the world's first ballast water management system, it showed that it was concentrating on the ballast water management business, reducing even the existing land-based water management business area. The business area expansion was also aimed at strengthening the ballast water management system service by extending to all the equipment, services, and training highly related to ballast water. In other words, it is focusing on the ballast water market more seriously than other competitors.
Continuing from the past to the present and future, TECHCROSS is here. The ballast water management system is not a consumable. Once installed, the system is used together until the end of the life of the ship. What is the most important thing at this time? It is the durability of the system and the quick reaction capability of the manufacturer when a problem breaks out. What if the makers no longer produces the product? What if the person in charge disappears due to a merger with another company? In the end, the damage will go straight to the customer. TECHCROSS, however, is different. It has been so, and will continue to be sincere about the ballast water management system. As with their business activities, which are continuously upgrading the performance and service of the ballast water management system, such as the development of DTS with improved TRO sensing accuracy and control system that integrates TLG and VRCS, TECHCROSS will make efforts to continue to provide customers with better service.
