TECHCROSS, a manufacturer of a ballast water treatment system, became the talk of the industry by announcing that the ballast water treatment system was successfully installed in a chemical tanker being constructed in a domestic shipyard.
In July 2009, TECHCROSS supplied a ballast water treatment system to a Korean shipowner for installation in a 12.8K Product Chemical Tanker. This Product Chemical Tanker presented challenges in the installation of the ballast water treatment system as it employs a submerged ballast pump. A submerged pump is installed in the ballast water tank. Many people expected that it would be impossible to install a ballast water treatment system in a ship where a submerged pump was already installed.
Nevertheless, among available ballast water treatment systems, Electro‐Cleen™ System was selected due to its low head loss. Through close technical discussion between the shipbuilder and TECHCROSS, the personnel in charge of the study of the hull piping of the ship finally created a solution.
Techcross succeeded in installing the ECS by making a space for the ballast water treatment system on the deck of the ship. TECHCROSS stressed that this is the first time in the world for a shipbuilder to make a separate space to install a ballast water treatment system and added that they could do it as they had high confidence in the reliability of ECS equipment.
The shipbuilder added that only TECHCROSS, based on its knowhow, could provide the installation service as the ship presented special installation challenges. This ship, after completing the ECS installation, was delivered to the shipowner in September 2009.
TECHCROSS had previously experienced installing the world's first explosion-proof ballast water treatment systems in a Chemical Tanker which was constructed in a Japanese shipyard.
