Techcross Enters the Green Hydrogen Industry
2021-06-30
On June 11, 2021, the electrolysis water treatment company Techcross entered into a technology execution agreement with the Korea Institute of Energy Research (KIER) on the alkaline electrolysis production technology for the green hydrogen energy industry. As KIER is Korea’s leading institution with the best technology and infrastructure in the research area, Techcross expects to benefit from this agreement.

The 10kW-class high-efficiency alkaline electrolysis stack,  which is at the core of the technology transfer, was developed in Korea, with the core parts and materials procured within the country. The technology enables electrolysis to produce 2N㎥ of green hydrogen per hour at 84% (for HHV ) efficiency at most. During the 1,008 hours of operation, the stack successfully maintained the 82% hydrogen production efficiency, proving its world-class efficiency and durability in long-term operation. The hydrogen produced in this process is environmentally friendly; 100% of the produced hydrogen used in renewable energy production systems. Therefore, it is environmentally friendly technology that is aligned with the global initiative to reduce carbon emissions.

The Korean electrolysis industry currently lacks infrastructure, with the hydrogen production efficiency of the stacks falling under 70%, demonstrating a large technological gap compared to leading global companies. The electrolysis technology transferred from KIER, in addition to Techcross’s world-class technology in the field and the company’s EPC and O&M capabilities in the environmental industry, is expected to bring the Korean electrolysis industry to global leadership.

To achieve this goal, Techcross plans to relocate its Gyeongin Research Center to a nearby lot in Songsan-dong, Hwaseong-si in July 2021, in addition to boosting its development manpower and experimental facilities in support of its green hydrogen business. Furthermore, the company will form a working committee with KIER and local governments to establish a green hydrogen production complex through a wind power complex, which will operate a system validation project. The primary goal of Techcross’s green hydrogen business is to develop a green hydrogen production system that can be implemented in renewable energy complexes in Korea and abroad. The company will work with affiliates including Techcross Water & Energy and Techcross Environmental Service to conduct EPC and O&M projects. The company will also work on research to achieve its secondary goal, which is to expand the business into the wider hydrogen value chain areas including the production of specialized modules that can be employed by other hydrogen industry players.

With carbon neutrality and the Green New Deal policy towing the social movement to enable a sustainable future, the Korean government announced its Carbon Neutrality 2050 Plan in October 2020, which makes the pledge to convert over 80% of the hydrogen energy used in the country into green hydrogen. Following this social trend, Techcross is working to succeed in the hydrogen industry based on its achievements in the shipbuilding and maritime industry.
